USMLE Step 2 CS Course Goals

This is an exam that requires an understanding of the American medical culture. You may already be an excellent physician but knowing "medicine" is simply not enough! Understanding how Americans expect their doctors to behave and react is one of the most important parts of this exam. The nuances are not emphasized enough in the preparation guides that most candidates work with. This aspect of the ICE (Integrated Clinical Encounter) will be covered in detail.

There have been major changes to the USMLE Step 2 CS exam and greater emphasis is now placed on CIS skills

(Communication and Interpersonal). Most important is actually role-playing the scenarios, making mistakes and learning how to correct them. These role-playing scenarios are an integral part of the program.

As a native English speaker I will target your SEP skills
(Spoken English Proficiency) offering advice on cadence, speech clarity, appropriate vocabulary, "Americanisms" and more.

We will focus on the application of your medical knowledge and your understanding of clinical science towards the goal of providing quality patient care, promoting good health and the prevention of disease.

All three sub-components of the exam will be covered:

ICE - Integrated Clinical Encounter
CIS - Communication and Interpersonal skill
SEP - Spoken English Proficiency

Attention will be placed on:

The relationship that exists between clinical science and real world interaction with patients.
Techniques for gathering information.
Communicating with the patient, verbal & non-verbal.
Conducting the physical exam.
Skills for writing the Exam Notes.
Conducting telephone patient encounters

After my first meeting with you I will provide an honest assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. I may tell you quite honestly that you have nothing to worry about!

Other candidates may require a few meetings to sharpen their skills while others may have challenges that cause me to tell them to delay their exam in order to maximize their performance.
